Me: I'd like a pair of black bootleg jeans please
Every jean store ever: We've got slim, skinny, super skinny, skinny chinos, jeans that look like they've been mauled by rabid wolves, and jeggings
Me: Err...got any straight leg?
Jean store: All we've got are Levis and they'll cost you over a hundred bucks

Okay, finally got around to reading it

Quick spoilery thoughts )

This book is better than I thought it would be. I was expecting a 'young people now days are posting pictures of themselves on the interwebs and that's ~problematic~' but it's more of a social analysis of the western concept of the self.

The early chapters on western history are very generalised (goes from 'tribal' to ancient greek to christianity while skipping Rome entirely) but the chapters on neoliberalism and the self-help movement have been pretty informative so far. Interesting to see just how many terrible ideas have managed to worm their way into modern culture, and interesting to see just how *recent* they are.

For what it's worth, I hate posting my picture online, but I'm not convinced selfies are necessarily a form of narcissism. If online communication is being used as a digital substiture for face-to-face communication then yeah, it's probably not unreasonable that you'd want to see someone's face. Of course that brings up a different bunch of issues but that's not something I'll be getting into anytime soon.

Edit: I take it back. The author's case study for a typical Millenial was a girl who had very rich parents and was home-schooled. Bah.

Okay, managed to fix my KOTOR 2 game by uninstalling all the mods and setting it to legacy PC mode so I could finish it!

The ending felt...kind of unfinished? Like I'd missed something? I'd heard a lot of the content was cut so I guess it should be expected?

Now to replay KOTOR 1 and actually put some points towards my Charisma stat this time...

So just at the point where I'm at the last stage of KOTOR 2 the game constantly starts freezing up and becomes unplayable. Then when I attempt to fix my Steam installation it refuses to recognise any of my saved games so now it looks like I will have to start the game from scratch.

*weeps tears of blood*

It's 7pm, 34 deg Celcius (93.2F), and I'm still waiting for the sun to go down so I can take the washing off the line without getting sunburnt.

So how hard is it to emigrate to Canada? Asking for friend....

Saw the Assassin's Creed movie yesterday. I found it a mixed bag. The parts that were set in the past were absolutely fantastic but the modern day parts really dragged. And most of the movie was the modern parts.

Call me shallow but it really needed more people in funny cloaks jumping off buildings and stabbing dudes and less close ups of Michael Fassbender's teary-eyed face.

The costumes were gorgeous though. Well the one's in the past were...

Possible tangent for a later date, but I'm finding nearly all movies now days have a theme of order = bad, freedom = good. Which is fine enough in theory, but I'd like a bit of creativity please. I don't think we've had an anarchist villian since Heath!Joker in The Dark Knight.

The only recent movie who I feel actually did a good job of exploring creeping fascism was Captain Americ: The Winter Soldier and that was fascism from within. Evil-outsider-who-want-to-take-away-our-freedom-for-the-sake-of-peace honestly rings a little hollow.

I've seen New Year's Eve 2016 referred to as 'Happy Piss Off 2016 Day' on twitter.

I concur.

Does anyone still use journal mood themes? I actually forgot about them.

God, I can't even remember how to use a custom mood theme. And they were such a big deal back on LJ...
